What is a Leader?

So how do you know if you are a leader?

Are leaders a different color?  Do they stand out because they are taller? Stronger?  Fatter?  Thinner?  Are leaders always up front?  At the back?  Do they have titles?  Special offices, perhaps?  How do you tell if you are a leader?

How do we prepare for something if we do not know what we are preparing for?

John Quincy Adams said:

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.”

John Quincy Adams was the sixth president of the United States .  He was the son of a president, a powerful Secretary of State, a powerful leader in his home state of Massachusetts and in the country.

So, according to John Quincy Adams’ definition, are you a leader?

Being a leader is key to being powerful.

Who do you have the opportunity to inspire?

What is your impact on:

Think of three things that you do every day that might inspire others in some way.

Some of these ways can be very simple.       Are you a good listener?

                                                                        Are you a good helper?

                                                                        Are you a good explainer?

                                                                        Are you a good example?

Now think of three specific individuals that you might share these things with.

I did these kinds of things regularly with fellow teachers, custodians, secretaries and others in addition to my students.  I found as I practiced them, more and more people came to me seeking them.

Leading by inspiration lifts you up as you lift others up.

Powerful Leaders lead effectively – by influencing, teaching & inspiring others

Real power is not physical strength. Real power is the knack of getting along; having people like you; and, working with others for bilateral benefit. It's the capacity to make friends, create relationships, motivate students, and influence people. Real power is having a vision and communicating that vision to others, empowering others to be their best selves.  Real Power is having an extensive “circle of influence” enabling you to get things done right—right now.

Really powerful people model powerful behaviors and inspire others to action.

A powerful person is anyone who has influence over another person. Notice that we said influence, not control. Many people misunderstand power as a control issue. Whether you know it or not, you influence many people every day. It may be as obvious as your interaction with a co-worker or a family member; or, as subtle as your mannerisms when standing in a long checkout line at the store. In every circumstance where you can be observed by another person, you are exerting influence by word and/or by example. You must address the characteristics that you show to the people in your life. These are the same characteristics that these same people look at when determining how powerful a person you are to them.
