A Powerful Teacher Today!

Do you ever feel Powerless?

Controlled by other people?

Controlled by circumstances?

Controlled by the “Rules?”

Controlled by the system?

Wouldn’t you like to be a more powerful Teacher?

When is a Person Powerful?

A powerful person is anyone who has influence over another person. Notice that it is who has influence, not control. Many people misunderstand power as a control issue.

Whether you know it or not, you influence many people every day. It may be as obvious as your interaction with a student or as subtle as your mannerisms when standing in a long line. In every circumstance where you can be observed; you are exerting influence.

To become powerful you must address the characteristics that you show to the people in your life.  People look at these characteristics when determining how powerful a person you are to them.

What is Powerful Teaching?

To have long lasting influence as a powerful teacher requires more than good lesson plans and great lectures.

Real power as a teacher is the knack of getting along with staff and students; having people like you; and working with others for bilateral benefit. It's the capacity to motivate students, create relationships and influence people.

Real Power is having an extensive “circle of influence” enabling you to get things done right – right now.  Real power is having a vision and communicating that vision to others, empowering others to be their best selves.

Really powerful teachers model powerful behaviors and inspire others to action.

How Do You Become a Powerful Teacher?

You grow more powerful each day by building on your strengths and eliminating your weaknesses.  As a teacher I grew to be a master teacher, leader of other teachers, and national CareerTech teacher of the year.

I worked on this each school day by:

·  Selecting a quote by a powerful person and writing it on the board,

·  Sharing the quote with my students and discussing the implications for our lives,

·  Having one or more of the students research and report on the author, and

· Applying one skill or idea from that to my activities that day.

Becoming powerful involves continuous daily improvement.

Who Has Been Powerful in Your Life?

Powerful people from the past were powerful because of their influence on others, even you. You were influenced by coming into contact with powerful people or by reading what they wrote or what others said about them.

One powerful influence on my life was Dee Villa Clark.  Dee Villa Clark was my teacher from the 2nd grade through the 8th grade.  She taught 1st through the 8th grade in a one room school to as few as 13 in my graduating year and to as many as 40 in prior years.  She was a marvel, a terrific teacher and role model.  She could involve the youngest to the oldest in learning that stimulated and invigorated.

Others included George Washington Carver and Thomas Edison.  Here were two of the most prolific inventors the world has ever known.  Both were inducted into the Inventors Hall of Fame.

Edison was the master of things mechanical, holding 1,039 patents at his death.

George Washington Carver was the master of the plant world as well as a Master Teacher.  He developed 325 uses for peanuts, 100 uses for sweet potatoes and hundreds more of other plant species.
